Description

A SHIRVAN KARAGASHLI RUG, EAST CAUCASUS

circa 1870

approximately 150 by 94cm; 4ft. 11in., 3ft. 1in.

Christies, London, 8 April 2014, lot 86

Dr. Ulrich Schürmann illustrated a similar rug in Caucasian Rugs (Munich, 1965, pp.284-5); however the Schürmann rug has the more typical three angled palmettes in the field. Here, the interaction of the four red palmettes floating against the abrashed lucid sky blue of the field create an almost three dimensional effect, demonstrating a highly sophisticated understanding of the effects of colour.
