This work belongs to a series of monumental nudes which Caro executed shortly after the period when he worked as a sculptural assistant to Henry Moore from July 1951 to August 1953. Later in his career he would eschew this kind of figuration in favor of a personal idiom closer to the work of David Smith than the monumental tradition of Moore.
