This charming sketch is a study for two paintings Cézanne made in 1873-74 depicting a group of young people fishing by a riverbank, one of which is now in the Yale University Art Gallery (see image 5). A woman in a dress, at left, watches as the young man lowers his fishing rod into the stream. The present lot offers incredible insight into the artist's working process. In the present sketch, we see the artist experimenting with additional figures in the background, eventually deciding on a pared down composition.
