Description
SPEED, JOHN
A New and Accurat Map of the World.... London: G. Humble, 1626 [or later]
15 1 /4 x 20¼ in.; 390 x 510 mm). Handcolored; minor repair at bottom of central fold, some old tape remnants to margins and a marginal reinforcement on verso.
First issue of one of the few early world maps in English available and containing the most accurate information to date, it nevertheless still depicted California as an island and the Upper Northwest of North America remains distorted and largely unexplored. The four bust portraits include Drake and Cavendish.
