Complete set of illustrations for the original publication of Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, comprising:

i) cover illustration for hardback edition, 310 by 500mm., fine ink and watercolour drawing, signed “Faith Jaques ’72” lower left; ii) cover illustration for paperback edition, 330 by 450mm., fine ink and watercolour drawing, unsigned; iii) 60 pen and ink drawings on 50 sheets (together with an additional three abandoned drawings on reverse of three of these sheets), various sizes, all sheets signed and dated in pencil “Faith Jaques 1972” or “Faith Jaques ’72”, mostly titled by the artist with occasional additional notes, all but one sheet with protective leaf attached with adhesive tape, some corrections in gouache, some minor soiling (52 sheets)

A COMPLETE SET OF FAITH JAQUES’ ILLUSTRATIONS FOR ROALD DAHL’S CLASSIC, CHARLIE AND THE GREAT GLASS ELEVATOR

The first English edition of Dahl’s sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was published in 1973 by Allen and Unwin with illustrations by Faith Jaques, the same artist who had worked on Chocolate Factory in 1968. It is these vivid and detailed illustrations which introduced Charlie’s adventures with the Vermicious Knids to the original early 1970s audience in the U.K., not Michael Foreman’s or Quentin Blake’s later depictions. The first hardback edition, published by Allen & Unwin, was published in pictorial boards. The Puffin books edition, first issued in 1975, was published in wrappers featuring a different full-colour illustration. Both covers are included in the present lot.

Alan Horne notes in his Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators notes that Jaques (1923-1997) “found her niche in the illustration of children’s books, working intensively during the 1960s and early 1970s as a black and white illustrator for many of the finer writers of books for children”.

Many of the illustrations in this lot include notes from the artist to the publisher. For the illustration on pages 88-89 Jaques apologises “Sorry I’ve had to cross the gutter. I tried to avoid it in first version of this but it doesn’t do, it divides too much for the meaning. I know we’ll lose bit in the middle but I think it’s a case where we’ll have to let the chips fall where they may…” A note for the illustration on page 99 reveals that Roald Dahl seems had some input on the artist’s creative process: “RD suggests this to replace text (ie label to be read from drawing)”. A note on the reverse of the illustration for page 19 is a note directly addressed to "Mr Dahl" stating that "I know it's fantasy but all the same I do like to have a bit of factual basis - and thousands of little boys know so much these days!"
