Description
POTTER, BEATRIX
The Tailor of Gloucester. Frederick Warne and Co., 1903
16mo, FIRST EDITION, first printing (single-page end-paper occurring four times), 27 coloured illustrations by Beatrix Potter, original floral cloth lettered in gilt, some splitting at gutter, contemporary ownership inscription
A remarkably clean and fresh copy. Linder notes that the 'art fabric de-luxe edition' has either 'the usual frontispiece' or 'the cover picture'. This copy has the latter. It appears that it was Potter's suggestion that the deluxe binding should use cloth from her grandfather's calico printing factory in Manchester (see letter from Potter to Norman Warne, 12 March 1903).
LITERATURE:
Linder p. 423
