O'Reilly is known for his photographic collages which often include art historical references, dichotomous images juxtaposing family photographs, reproductions of works by Vermeer or Caravaggio, and gay pornography. He has created several series dedicated to artists who struggled with their sexuality, such as Marsden Hartley, Hart Crane, and Henry James. O’Reilly exhibited with Allan Stone Projects throughout the 1980s, a time when the subject of sexual identity was at the forefront of social, political and cultural discourse. O’Reilly has shown at many renowned institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and he was included in the 1995 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, among others.
