Cook moved to San Francisco in 1951, working mostly in printmaking specializing in intaglio, typography and etchings. He became active in the Bay Area art scene when he began teaching art at the San Francisco Art Institute, where he met Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, and Joan Brown, whom he married. Cook turned to painting in the late 1960s, creating focused still lifes of single objects such as a box, a flower or a hat. His quiet, muted paintings continue the lineage of Giorgio Morandi and 19th-century American Illusionism. Cook also painted landscapes, inspired by the delta area of the Sacramento river. His works are in the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco.
