Rolex introduced the GMT-Master in 1954 to capitalize on the growth of commercial air travel. It was originally designed as a tool watch for pilots to utilize when flying between multiple time zones, allowing them to quickly indicate time for home and local times. The design has been cemented as one of the most recognizable looks in watchmaking history. Here we have an eye-catching steel and gold variant with a chocolate brown dial. The dial and bezel insert on this watch has faded slightly, adding an attractive warmth to the watch and goes perfectly with the gold hands and gold "nipple" hour markers. To top it all off, this watch is offered with its original chronometer certification with punched serial number.
Case: The case is in overall good condition with surface wear and nicks throughout commensurate with age. The lugs retain strong proportions. The bezel insert has light signs of wear and has faded to an attractive light brown color. Crystal glazing with surface scratches. The bracelet is in overall very good condition with stretch and previous light signs of polish. The clasp is stamped Rolex U.S.A. and 14k gold trim.
Dial: The dial is in overall very good condition. Service minute and hour hands. The GMT hand has some hairlines. A small area of residue to the outer track of the dial at 9 o'clock. Indexes with light oxidation and luminous material inside with light signs of age.
Movement: The movement is running at time of cataloging, however it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement.
