All enamel dials of Ref. 5077 were done by hand using the ancient art of cloisonné. Cloisonné is a process where a design is created on a blank canvas (the dial) using thin strips of gold joined to the base that create a border between colours. Considered a ‘lost art’, each enameller will usually have a creation of their own specially formulated colours with which to work, including a colour chart to use as a guide, since the material changes in appearance when heated. The process can be extremely lengthy as each colour has to be fired separately at a different temperature. This also increases the chances of failure as the firing process is incredibly delicate; even the most skilled and experienced enameller could lose months of work due to unforeseeable cracking during the process. Due to the process in which the dials are made, each watch in the series can be considered unique. A wonderful cloisonné watch dial like this is truly a miniature work of art which will last for generations. Accompanied by a presentation box, certificate of origin, instruction manual and leather book.
The watch is in new and excellent condition. Peeling at the strap keeper. The movement is running at time of cataloguing; however, it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement.
