First published as a short story in Analog in 1977, then expanded here into a full-length novel about child savants who use virtual reality video games to fight an alien species at devastating personal cost. Given the well-known anti-LGBT+ views of the author, the book is a great modern example of the argument that the best books transcend the intent of their creators: Ender's Game is one of the most empathetic explorations of interplanetary contact in science fiction, a book fundamentally about outsiders and “otherness.” It has also been instrumental to a generation of introverted kids who found comfort in a morally complex book about nerds on a mission to save the world – this copy’s inscription pithily reads: “A survival guide for geniuses."
