The child of Lord and Lady Greystoke who were marooned in West Africa, Tarzan ("White Skin" in ape language) was adopted by the she-ape Kala after his parents pass away. Immediately popular, Rice Burroughs's hero featured in more than two dozen sequels and was further immortalized in film.
