In 1987, Nike introduced the revolutionary Air Max 1, the first Nike shoe to reveal its Air-cushioned sole. Designed by Tinker Hatfield after visiting Paris’ Centre Georges Pompidou, the Air Max line similarly embraces the exposure of its structural elements. In 1990, the Air Max 90 was released as the Air Max III and is considered one of the most successful Air Max silhouettes in the Nike dynasty.  

Similar to the Air Jordan, Hatfield was tasked with taking the successful, yet brand new, Air Max sneaker line and improving the design in terms of function and style. The updated Air Max 90 featured an enhanced Air bag with a bold infrared window, further highlighting the inner-workings of the sneaker. Unlike the primary red and blue original colorways of the Air Max 1, the Air Max 90 was released in a Infrared colorway, making them more in tune with the style of the 90’s. Finished with a Duromesh upper and improved thermoplastic straps, Tinker’s design improvements made the Air Max 90 one of the most recognizable and iconic sneakers of the Air Max line.
