Catalogue Note
Born in 1977 in Al Baha and raised in Mecca, Rashed Al Shashai maintains a practice which questions societal dynamics and the philosophy which underpins human existence. His monumental installations are recognised for their incorporation of local materials which carry with them historical symbolism that speaks to the evolution of the Kingdom. He is director of the Madina Arts Centre, Al-Madinah, and his works have appeared in notable exhibitions including Noor Riyadh (2021 and 2022) and the Contemporary Art Biennale, Diriyah (2021). A monumental example of his work is currently on view at the Royal Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Mayfair, London.
