Throughout the 1990s, Walt Disney Studios partnered with Sotheby's to auction artwork created for films of the studio's "renaissance" (1989-1999, a period of commercially successful and critically acclaimed animated releases). The present example came to auction in the 1996 sale, The Art of Pocahontas, but as computers had usurped physical cels in the animation process, the studio's artists hand painted presentation cels to accompany the backgrounds being offered. These works are framed and matted together as a single setup.
