Description

A British map of the Holy Land by Philip Lea.

  • Philip Lea (English).
  • A Map of Canaan With the Adjacent Countries Very Usefull for the Understanding of the Old Testament. Sold by .P. Lea, at the Atlas and Hercules in Cheap-side, and in Westminster-hall.
  •  London: 1692.
  • Original outline color.
  • This work is presented unframed.

A rare map of the Holy Land in Old Testament times, but extending to Rome, Alexandria, the Caspian Sea and Arabia, all extremely abridged.

The route of the Exodus from Egypt is marked, and the cities of Sodom, Gomorah, Zeboim and Admiah are depicted in flames in the Dead Sea.

This is an extremely rare map, not listed in the Laor Collection, probably published for a bible rather than an atlas.

Philip Lea began business in 1683 and had premises in Westminster Hall between 1689 and 1695.
