Description

Oscar Frederick Schmidt (American, 1892–1957).


Carl Oscar Schmidt first studied at the Pratt Institute and the Art Students League in New York City with Bridgman before embarking on a world-wide art study tour after his discharge from the army in 1918. While he was traveling, Schmidt was commissioned to carve the tombstone for Paul Gauguin's grave in Tahiti, which remains the artist's monument to this day. Schmidt undertook many illustrations for leading magazines of the time including The Saturday Evening Post among others, and he was a member of the Society of Illustrators and the Salmagundi Club. The recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards, he exhibited widely and with success including at the National Academy of Design (1925) and the Society of Illustrators.
