In February 2018, as part of Nike's NBA All-Star Weekend celebration, Jordan Brand hosted a “Studio 23” event at the Interscope Records studios. As an exclusive launch to come out of the installation, Nike released a “Black Cement” Air Jordan 3 Retro with Interscope branding. The classic colorway remains largely unaltered, but this exclusive release pair is set apart by Interscope’s “I” logo near the lateral heel collar and “Interscope Records” across the special set of laces.

The Air Jordan 3 is credited with keeping Michael Jordan at Nike after the original Air Jordan designer, Peter Moore, left the company. Tinker Hatfield designed the shoe in close collaboration with Jordan, addressing the player’s request for a more lightweight, modern shoe. The Air Jordan 3, notably, is the first Air Jordan to feature “Visible Air” in the form of an air pocket under the heel. Though just in the beginning of his career, Hatfield would soon become one of the most influential sneaker designers of all time.
