This early Danish Modernist first studied in Svendborg (1894-1898) before attending Kristian Zahrtmann's School of Painting (1899-1901). Hansen's work showed an early connection to French Impressionism, both in his choice of motifs and in his emphasis on atmospheric light, with the strong color and bold brushwork of the Norwegian painters Ludvig Karsten and Henrik Lund also an early influence. Hansen was the recipient of numerous scholarships including the Raben-Levetzau (1911), from the Copenhagen Royal Art Academy (1911, 1915), the Eckersberg Medal (1921), the Rundskuedagens Studielegat (1924), Ancker (1929) and took painting trips to both Paris (1909) and Holland (1930). His first visit to Paris exposed him to the ferment of ideas at the heart of the Modernist movement and accelerated his commitment to a pure Impressionist style.

Settling in Turø in 1921, Hansen exhibited widely and with success including at the Glass Palace, Munich (1913), in Bucharest (1936-1937), Copenhagen State Museum of Art (1941), Oslo (1946), Fyns Art Museum (1952), the Copenhagen Royal Art Academy Charlottenborg exhibitions, beginning in 1904, and at the Copenhagen Secession, from 1909. Niels Hansen's work is held in prominent private and public collections, including the permanent collection of the Copenhagen Art Museum.
