Description

A beaded wedding apron from the Ndebele people.

  • Strands of colored glass beads woven onto a leather skirt.
  • Mapoto were made and gifted by a bride's inlaws. Full of symbolism, the colors and patterns were often regional intimate references to family and status.
  • The lower flaps represent two houses being joined in marriage. The intricate fringe between symbolizes the wish for many children.

Minor nicks and overall patina and soiling to leather consistent with age and use.
