Description

Gustave Blache III (American, b. 1977).

This work is framed.

Gustave Blache III is a figurative artist best known for his series which highlight the everyday labor of individuals, from seeing-impaired mop makers to James Beard Award-winning Creole chefs. Raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, Blache received both his BFA and MFA from the School of Visual Arts in Savannah, Georgia (1998) and New York City (2000). Blache’s work, referred to as “visual journalism,” combines a documentary-style approach on small-scale wood panels with bold, impressionist brushwork to capture the hidden beauty of contemporary life.

Natalie Scrape Cleaning is part of a series entitled Simon Parkes Art Conservation, which follows conservators of the New York-based studio as they employ traditional methods and practices in art conservation. In his depiction of fine art restoration, Blache celebrates conservators’ vital and often overlooked work.

His work is featured in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of African American History, Washington, D.C., and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Philadelphia, PA.
