a German map of Scandinavia, by Martin Wäldseemüller.
A scarce woodcut map of Scandinavia, one of the extra modern maps in Waldseemuller's edition of of Claudius Ptolemy's 'Geographia.'
It is a copy of the first printed map of the region, published in the Ulm edition of Ptolemy in 1482.
Cities marked include 'Asto' (Oslo), 'Begensis' (Bergen), 'Nodrosia' (Nidaros) and 'Stauargerensis' (Stavanger).
This map was first printed in 1513: this example dates from 1520, with all but one of the lines of letterpress text in the borders removed.
Later edition of Waldseemuller's editions of Ptolemy used the smaller woodblock cut for Laurent Fries.
