First edition, volume one of two, of Sade's most notorious books, which he at times denied authorship of during his lifetime.

- Rebound in 20th century half brown leather with marbled paper boards, paneled spine has gilt lettering and tooling with green label for title, title misspelled "Justine" as "Justinn."
This is only volume one of the original edition and is missing some of the original pages. Its alternate title is Les Malheurs de la Vertu and the second volume following this one is titled L'Histoire de Juliette, Sa Soeur.
Identifying a particular edition of Justine is a bibliographical challenge due to the complexity of the printing. The clandestine printing of publishers and printers through multiple countries and cities combined with seizures by the authorities led to a wide variety of reissues and reprints.

Engravings tipped in at pages 82, 219, 209, 240 and 262.
