Description

Blackwoods’ working proof copy of the limited large paper edition of The Arabian Horse by Major-General Tweedie.

  • Major-General William Tweedie (Scottish).
  • The Arabian Horse.
  • Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, circa 1894.
  • Not Numbered.
  • In green paper coves.

The Blackwoods’ Office uncorrected proof copy, stamped by Blackwoods on title page and finals. Being perhaps the first copy off the press, the proof is without frontispiece, several of the full page illustrations and the map in rear pocket – a number of the illustrations are ticked in pencil.

An excessively scarce edition and possibly the first off the press, used by Blackwoods to configure later editions.

Tweedie was appointed as Resident of Turkish Arabia in Baghdad in 1881, a role which involved inspecting all aspects of local life, including the trade in Arabian Horses which he was especially interested in.
