Middle Upper Paleolithic (circa 30,000–20,000 years ago)

One of the most significant sites of Paleolithic rock art, Gallery A of the La Pasiega Cave (Cantabria) ends in an extremely narrow passageway where one can barely stand upright; nevertheless, conceals an extraordinary collection of animal paintings and geometric compositions in red and sienna, generally rectangular in shape and internally compartmentalized, each one unique, forming an unparalleled example of a deep cave “sanctuary,” an altarpiece dating back more than 20,000 years. The so-called “signs” are, along with animals, the other major thematic category of Paleolithic art, and they are particularly numerous in the Cantabrian region. Highly varied, ranging from simple dots to complex motifs, they form “aniconic” groups or are depicted in association with animal and human figures.
