Spanish artist Javier Calleja’s work, which spans the mediums of painting, sculpture, installation and beyond, is instantly recognizable for his big-eyed smiling boy characters. Calleja has shown at galleries in cities including Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, New York and Hong Kong among others, and his work is included in several public collections. While Calleja admits that he draws on childhood memories when creating his signature characters, he prefers not to explain his works, choosing rather to leave their meanings up for interpretation.

"Heads" (2020) depicts five of Calleja’s smiling boys, each with different hairstyles and eye colors, arranged head-on-top-of-head in a precarious stack. "No Art Here" (2021) depicts a standing boy with orange hair and a red cap holding a sign bearing the tongue-in-cheek title message.
