Frazer published his first edition of The Golden Bough in two volumes (1890), expanded into three volumes for the second edition (1900), and finally this third edition issued in twelve volumes. This massive work surveys the spiritual beliefs, practices and institutions of cultures worldwide and posits a natural progression from magic to religion to science.
