Description
A reduction of the world map by Jacob Harrewyn, showing the world as a sphere, centered on the North Pole.
A late-17th century map on an equidistant polar azimuthal projection.
California is an island; the Great Lakes are open-ended in the west; and the partial coastlines of Australia and New Zealand appear stretched east-west by the unusual projection. The four corners are filled with elaborate scenes with allegorical figures.
The map is a reduction of the four-sheet world map by Jacob Harrewyn, published by Robyn and Henrick Doncker in 1687. This single-sheet version was first published in 1696, with the decorative corners attributed to Herrewyn. This second state has had Robyn's name removed.
