Description

Sixth edition of The Castle of Otranto, a Gothic Story.

  • Horace Walpole (English).
  • London: Printed By Bodoni, for J. Edwards, 1791.
  • 245 pages.
  • Octavo.
  • Engraved ex-libris on a full-sheet bound in.
  • Frontispiece in two states, both present.
  • Illustrated with four engraved plates by Birril.
  •  Bound in a later half red morocco binding with pink marbled boards and matching endpapers by the Harcourt Bindery, with their stamp, top and spine edges gilt.

Some issues have two states of a view of the castle of Otranto, a portrait of Lady Mary Coke and six plates representing different scenes from the story. These plates were not printed by Bodoni, but added in 1793 in England. This copy has the frontispieces and four of the six plates.

The Castle of Otranto is generally considered to be the first gothic novel. It melds medievalism and terror in a haunted castle into a thrilling tale.
