Catalogue Note
The GMT-Master (for Greenwich Mean Time, indicating the mean solar time measured at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich) has undergone numerous evolutions and boasts a rich history closely linked to aviation.
Highly practical thanks to its ability to display a second time zone, it has been a true professional tool watch since the 1950s. Notably, Pan American World Airways commissioned GMT-Master for its airline pilots, and the model was also worn by William J. Knight during his aviation speed record in 1967, when he reached Mach 6.7, (7,274 kilometers per hour).
After the five-digit reference GMT-Master, Rolex introduced the GMT-Master II reference 116710LN in 2007, the first GMT-Master to feature a ceramic bezel. At the time, this bezel was entirely black, and it would take several more years before two-tone ceramic bezels appeared in the Rolex lineup.
In 2019, Rolex unveiled the GMT-Master II reference 126710BLNR, the direct successor to the 2013 “Batman”. It retained the iconic black and blue bezel while introducing the new calibre 3285, offering approximately 70 hours of power reserve and fitted with a Jubilee bracelet. Rolex enthusiasts quickly nicknamed it the “Batgirl,” reflecting the more refined and precious feel of the Jubilee bracelet compared to the Oyster bracelet.
The Rolex GMT-Master II stands as a witness to an era of conquest, innovation, and exploration. This more elegant version, fitted with a Jubilee bracelet, loses none of the robustness that defines this iconic tool watch.
