Description

A first edition, first printing of Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell.

  • George Orwell (English).
  • United Kingdom: Secker and Warburg, 1949.
  • In the original unclipped maroon wrapper, designed by Michael Kennard.

Nineteen Eighty-Four was first published in 1949, almost simultaneously in Britain and the United States. The British first edition appeared on 8 June 1949 from Secker & Warburg, Orwell’s long-time publisher, while Harcourt, Brace & Company issued the American edition five days later.

Both printings reflected wartime paper shortages, resulting in modest production quality.
