Description

French Directoire gilt bronze and marble obelisk clock and stand decorated with beaded lines.

  • Clock dial surmounted by two bacchantes holding a globe and a cupid hoisting a torch.
  • Obelisk is surmounted by an armillary sphere, an instrument formerly used in astronomy to model the celestial sphere and used to show the apparent motion of the stars, the Sun and the ecliptic around the Earth. 
  • Dial signed F, Berthhoud á Paris, a watchmaker who received "maître" in 1775.

Wear commensurate with age and normal use.

Both marbles are in good condition with little to no discoloration or chips.

Gilding of the two frontal relief panels and drapery accent are in good condition apart from a small line of missing gilding on the left side of the bottom bas relief.

Clock face is in fair condition due to discoloration of the white enamel around the number 12.
