Description

Creation I (Schöpfungsgeschichte), by Franz Marc, 1914.

  • Woodcut on tissue thin Japan Paper.
  • Signed in pencil by the artist’s wife "Maria Marc" verso.
  • This work is presented unframed.

The paper bears the violet inkstamp, verso "Handdruck vom Originalholzstock bastaetigt:" (Lugt 1782 b) that confirms that work has been printed by hand. This impression is one of ten printed on Japan paper aside from the edition of 100. It was printed for inclusion in the Bauhaus Mappe III, published in 1922 by the Staatliches Bauhaus Weimar. The paper bears their blindstamp in the lower left corner.

This subject was the ninth of fourteen included in the third Bauhaus portfolio. Another impression of this work can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New.

This work was originally conceived by Marc to be included in an illustrated edition of the book of Genesis, which was unfortunately never realized due to his untimely death.
