Description

A signed first edition, first printing of Black Mischief by Evelyn Waugh.

  • Evelyn Waugh (English).
  • London: Chapman and Hall, 1932.
  • With frontispiece, map on page 303.
  • Signed by the Author to the endpaper ‘With Best Wishes From/ Evelyn.’
  • In the original patterned faux-snakeskin cloth, with spine lettered in gilt, in the unclipped wrapper, accompanied by the rare Book Society ‘Book of the Month For October’ wrap-around band.

A sharp, comic satire about politics, modernization, and imperial absurdity. Set in the fictional African state of Azania, it follows the well-meaning but chaotic Emperor Seth as he tries to westernize his country, helped by the dubious Englishman Basil Seal. Waugh uses farce, cruelty, and brilliant exaggeration to expose vanity, incompetence, and cultural arrogance, making the novel funny, unsettling, and deliberately outrageous all at once
