Description

A first edition copy of Hemingway's second short story collection.

  • Ernest Hemingway (American).
  • New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1927.
  • 232 pages.
  • Bound in the original black cloth, gilt printed title labels on front board and spine, in original unclipped ($2.00) dust jacket with orange bands, blurbs printed within top and bottom bands of front panel, yellow pictorial endpapers; fore-edge uncut.

Hemingway began writing stories in this collection the same year that he published his first short story collection, In Our Time—but in the intervening years, his career would change dramatically. Fresh off the heels of The Sun Also Rises (1926), Men Without Women sold out its first printing (and much of its second) within a month. While a number of the stories here first appeared in publications like The Little Review and The New Republic, Men Without Women also includes four never before published stories: "Ten Indians"; "A Pursuit Race"; "Now I Lay Me"; and "A Simple Enquiry," which explores a homosexual attraction between two men on the front in Italy during World War I.
