Drawing inspiration from street art, comic books and animation, Madrid-born artist Edgar Plans’ series “Animal Heroes” blends childlike cuteness with a call to a higher purpose: The series consists of mouse-eared, big-headed characters in capes or masks, with giant eyes that stare in optimistic wonder. The “powers” these superheroes possess are, according to the artist, “lost human values,” including “solidarity, teamwork, taking care of our planet [and] being aware.”

Edgar Plans’ rise in the art world began after signing with Alzueta Gallery in Barcelona in 2015. His colorful, cartoonish paintings gained the attention of curator Matt Chung, who organized Plans’ first Hong Kong exhibition, Optical Heroes in 2020. Since then, works by Edgar Plans have appeared in auction at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips, and his limited-edition figurines have become extremely sought after by collectors world over.
