Description

Cisco Jiménez (Mexican, b. 1969).

Cisco Jiménez was born in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. He is a contemporary artist whose work includes drawing, painting, sculpture and installation which focus on Mexico’s social and political environment. Jiménez was a recipient of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte (SNCA) art grant from 2014-2016, which is one of Mexico’s most significant grant programs created by the Mexican Ministry of Culture.

“My work is fundamentally an inquiry into the contrasts of Latin American culture and society, from the origins before the conquest to the daily occurrence on such complex issues as politics, economics, popular expressions and the creativity of survival, as well as the tensions that exist between religious art and popular culture, folklore and mass culture, political robbery and religious manipulation, monopolies of economic power and drug trafficking culture. These energies are the basis for articulating metaphors and a type of "ironic debrits" (ironic debris) as ARTNEWS magazine once defined my work, the context in which a work of art is developed is very important to me, the anthropological vision that precedes the aesthetic design and all the possible implications that it generates in the most diverse disciplines.

Another great ingredient of my work is humor, from the simplest and most superficial to ironic mischief that borders on insolence. Humor and paradox is a constant in Latin American life as is the case in Mexico; along with humor comes political criticism and social resentment that are the fundamental theme in my drawings, collages, paintings and objects.”
