Description

Carl Frederick Sørensen (Danish, 1818-1879).

This work is offered in a custom-made carved giltwood frame by Stephen Motyka of Rhode Island.

A serene marine painting from the artist’s late period, showing both his unerring compositional sense and his mastery of light and perspective.

In 1848, Sorensen was commissioned by the Danish government as the official naval artist to accompany the Royal Danish Navy on an official tour of the Mediterranean and to make a series of studies of the trip. The inspiration that Sorensen derived from this expedition led him to return to Capri every summer for the remainder of his life, and also inaugurated his career as Denmark’s preeminent marine painter. Sorensen received many honors and awards during his lifetime and his work can be found in the permanent collections of museums worldwide, including a substantial collection at the Royal Naval Museum, Copenhagen.
