Carl (Christian Edvard Otto) Carlsen (Danish, 1855-1917).
This piece is final sale and not eligible for return.
Born in 1855, Carlsen attended the Royal Academy of Art (Kunstakademiet) of Copenhagen at the age of 26 from 1874 to 1879 and finished his studies in Paris between 1882 and 1883.
This luminous fall forest scene is among Carlsen's largest and most accomplished canvases. Three elegantly dressed female figures, including a young girl in a red coat admiring a doll at left, lend a sense of scale to the soaring trees and sprawling setting. Ready for rain, the foreground woman wears a hat with a veil and balances an umbrella in her arms, with her hands in a fur muff.
