Description
Carel Dake II (Dutch-American, 1881–1946).
This work is offered unframed.
A substantial, early 20th-century oil showing an elegant impressionist view of the Hagia Sophia Mosque from the water with a lateen-sailed fishing boat moored and several figures at the edge of the water. A lyrical and evocative Orientalist landscape painted with sensitivity and bravura brushwork.
Carel Lodewijk Dake II first studied with his father Carl Dake I, a professor at the Royal Academy of Amsterdam, where he subsequently painted for many years. He also traveled and painted throughout the East and the Orient, exhibiting widely and with success, including at the 1910 Universal Exposition in Brussels. The artist is well-listed in relevant art-biographical reference works, including in Benezit's definitive Dictionnaire des Peintures.
