Description

  • Yayoi Kusama (Japanese, b. 1929).
  • Along with the flower and the gourd, the butterfly is a classic motif in Kusama’s painting.
  • In Japanese culture the butterfly is believed to transport the soul between the realm of the living and the realm of the dead and is representative of metamorphosis and transformation.
  • In Butterfly, 1980, Kusama emphasizes the majesty of the creature, enlarging its form to fill the entire composition and adorning the wings with her iconic dot pattern so that they appear to shimmer and sparkle.
  • This work is accompanied by a registration card from the artist's studio, Registration No. 3544
  • Gilt wood frame.
  • This piece is final sale and not eligible for return.
