Unveiled in 2008 to mark the 80th anniversary of the Atmos, the Atmos 561 represents a masterful collaboration between Jaeger-LeCoultre and acclaimed Australian industrial designer Marc Newson. This remarkable reinterpretation of the iconic timepiece retains the ingenious mechanics that have defined the Atmos since its invention by Jean-Léon Reutter in 1928, while presenting it in a form that is unmistakably modern.
Encased in a hand-blown crystal case crafted at the prestigious Baccarat glassworks in France, the Atmos 561 is housed in ‘extra-clear’ glass—specially chosen by Newson to allow natural light to illuminate the mechanism without any visual distortion. The fluid, bubble-like silhouette is both futuristic and timeless, highlighting the movement as a floating, sculptural centerpiece.
At the heart of the Atmos lies a capsule filled with a mixture of gases, expanding and contracting with minute fluctuations in ambient temperature. A change of just one degree Celsius is sufficient to power the clock for two days—an extraordinary feat of engineering that allows the Atmos to run almost perpetually, requiring no winding and minimal maintenance.
The Atmos 561 was produced in a strictly limited edition of 888 examples worldwide, underscoring its significance as a collectible work of horological and design innovation. It stands as both a tribute to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s legacy of technical excellence and a testament to Marc Newson’s visionary approach to form and function.
