The story revolves around the character of Elinor Carlisle, who is accused of murdering her rival in love, Mary Gerrard. Hercule Poirot is called in to investigate. The novel delves into themes of jealousy, love, and the complexities of human relationships, with Poirot using his keen deductive skills to uncover the truth behind the murder. The title is drawn from a song in Shakespeare’s play ‘Twelfth Night’ and is partly courtroom based.
