Description
The Vans Sk8 Mid Futura x Simpsons is an iconic sneaker collaboration dating back to 2007. At the time, 12 artists were tapped to design 14 different pairs of shoes, culminating in the Simpsons x Vans pack. As one of the artists selected for the project, Futura chose the Sk8 Mid silhouette as his canvas for design. Covered in illustrations of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon—the iconic owner of Springfield’s Kwik-E-Mart—the shoe’s primarily black and white upper is brought to life. Additionally, Apu’s full name is embroidered on both heels, just below the predominant Vans logo. At 10 select retail locations, only 1,400 pairs—100 for each individual shoe—were ever released in this coveted sneaker series.
Brooklyn local Leonard Hilton McGurr, known as Futura, is one of the founding fathers of the graffiti movement in New York City. Futura started his career in the 1970s, tagging subway walls as "Futura 2000," a nod to his favorite film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Futura belongs to a notable group of artists that came out of New York City during this period, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Dondi White, all of whom exhibited at Fun Gallery in the 1980s. Futura is an admired illustrator, photographer and fashion designer whose art touches many different spheres of public life.
