Description
Beautiful copy of the June 1962 issue of Derriere le Miroir featuring Chagall.
Mr. Liverant Joseph (1894–1981), an ex-pat of Russian Jewish origin, fled Germany to take residence in Canada during the Second World War. Marc Chagall, an ex-pat of Russian Jewish origin, was fleeing France and the Holocaust to take refuge in New York City during the war years. In the years following his return to France, Chagall took up residence at his famed home in St-Paul-de-Vence while Liverant purchased a residence in Beaulieu-sur-Mer. Social circles, shared interests, a common Jewish backgrounds including speaking Yiddish along with a proximity in age, transpired into a long, congenial relationship. This warm relationship is evident in the numerous dedications made on the lithographs and books that are in this collection. After Liverant's death, the collection was passed onto his wife, Marguerite, and subsequently to his stepson, Mr. Felix Quinet. Felix Quinet had a decades-long relationship with the National Gallery of Canada and donated hundreds of Chagall lithographs, beginning in 1986.
