CATALOGUE NOTE
In 1914, Alexej von Jawlensky went into exile in Saint-Prex, Switzerland whereupon he began his Variations series. The present work from the series was painted just after Jawlensky moved to Zurich from Saint-Prex. During this period, the artist diverged from figuration into expressive abstraction. Variations was originally inspired by the artist’s view from his window in Switzerland. Earlier works from the series depict more naturalistic representations of the landscape–roads, trees, houses–while the later compositions became more representative of the artist’s emotional experience of his surroundings.
