CATALOGUE NOTE
Francesco Clemente is an Italian artist known for his dreamlike works that pursue themes such as sexuality, the human form, myth and spirituality. Inspired by extensive travels around the world, and particularly in India, much of his work features forms and symbols featured in traditional Indian art and Hindi spiritual texts. Untitled from 1985 draws from this rich trove of allusive imagery, creating a composition that is at once starkly figurative and suggestively mystical. “I believe there is such a thing as an imagination shared by the different contemplative traditions,” he has said. “My goal is to collect images and references from these traditions and connect them with the emotions from the present-day, and common experiences.”
