S perone Westwater Fischer was founded in 1975, when Gian Enzo Sperone, Angela Westwater, and Konrad Fischer opened a space at 142 Greene Street in SoHo, New York. (The gallery became Sperone Westwater in 1982.) The founders' original program showcased a European avant-garde and a core group of American artists. Notable early shows included the 1975 shows of Carl Andre and Gilbert & George; 1976 shows of On Kawara, Richard Long, and Bruce Nauman; a 1977 show of Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, and Sol LeWitt; a 1977 show of Gerhard Richter, a 1977 show of Hanne Darboven; a 1979 Joseph Beuys show; a 1979 show of a large Mario Merz igloo work; and several important shows by Bruce Nauman, Richard Long, and Gerhard Richter. Renowned American artists Susan Rothenberg and William Wegman have been with the gallery since 1987 and 1990, respectively. They are joined by an international roster including Jitish Kallat, Guillermo Kuitca, Wolfgang Laib, Katy Moran, and the estates of Malcolm Morley and Otto Piene, among others. Sperone Westwater also has in its inventory work by Carla Accardi, Alighiero Boetti, Francesco Clemente, Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Mario Merz, Julian Schnabel, and others.

The gallery maintains an active historical program, with an ongoing commitment to Arte Povera and the ZERO Group, beginning with the show “ZERO in New York: 1957-1976” in 2008. Heinz Mack has presented four solo shows at the gallery; Otto Piene presented a solo show in 2010 and the gallery mounted a major Piene survey in collaboration with the artist’s estate in 2016. Other significant historical exhibitions have included shows of early work by Louise Bourgeois and Cy Twombly in 1982 and 1989; "Early Conceptual Works," a show in 1989 featuring Boetti, On Kawara, Joseph Kosuth, and Nauman; "Gold: Gothic Masters and Lucio Fontana" in 1999; and “Painting in Italy 1910s-1950s: Futurism, Abstraction, Concrete Art” in 2015. This year, Sperone Westwater is pleased to celebrate the gallery’s 45th anniversary as well as the 10th anniversary of its Foster and Partners designed building, inaugurated at 257 Bowery, New York in 2010.
