ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Louise Fishman (b. 1939) uses scrapers, trowels, and traditional brushes to apply and remove dense layers of paint in loose, gestural scores across the canvas. Informed by her background in the feminist and queer liberation movements of the 1960s and 70s, Fishman’s subtractive method of mark-making celebrates process, and rejects the masculinist impulses of abstract expressionism. Fishman’s work is both meticulous and energetic, evoking the rigid, interlocking form of the grid, and the traditionally feminized craft of weaving. Her training as a sculptor is visible in the physicality of her paint, which is vigorously applied, indexing her movement about the canvas. Fishman has recently held solo exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia (2016); Neuberger Museum, Purchase, New York (2016); and Goya Contemporary, Baltimore (2013). Her work is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia; and the Jewish Museum, New York, among others. In the fall of 2020, Louise Fishman will have her first solo exhibition at Karma, New York.
