Spencer Sweeney (b. 1973, Philadelphia) is an artist working fluently across a wide variety of media and genre; he is a painter and sculptor, as well as musician and DJ. Since coming to prominence in the late 90's in the art and music worlds of New York City, he has produced a vast body of work that is at once aggressive and sentimental, tender and harsh, and draws upon the likes of Peter Saul, Albert Oelhen, and Martin Kippenberger, as well as more distant art historical figures like William Blake, whose multifarious practice serves as an inspiration and precedent for Sweeney's own.

Sweeney lives and works in New York. He has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions both stateside and abroad, including at Gavin Brown's enterprise, New York; TRAMPS, London; Gagosian Gallery, New York; Karma, New York; The Modern Institute, Glasgow; and Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin; as well as significant appearances in group exhibitions, including: ‘Do Your Thing’, White Columns, New York (2012); ‘Nudes”, The Green Gallery, Milwaukee (2011); ‘That was then … This is Now’, PS1, New York (2008); ‘Day for Night’, Whitney Biennale, New York (2006).
